Goodbye to Leonie Downing

We say farewell with grateful hearts….

Leonie Downing, aged 90, and a student in the School for almost 50 years, will move to Johannesburg at the end of June.

For 4 decades Leonie took charge of all the musical celebrations…..and there were many! Only she had the courage, patience and humour to put a choir together consisting of other School members (both young and old) who had untrained voices and who could not read music!

She introduced us to a world of magic and who of us will ever forget an evening of song in tribute to the late Lawrence Stretton – the founder of the Durban School. The beautiful words from St John continue to echo throughout our building, now shared with St James School for Girls and Boys.

It will not be possible to feel separated from this gracious lady in any way. And we know that Leonie will hold us all in heart and mind – harmoniously of course!!
